Week 6 Spring

For this week, pick the chapters from this book (The Essential Drucker) that you would like to read with the class.  Pick as many or as few as you would like.  Perhaps picking 5 chapters is a reasonable number.

What chapters look like the will be useful in your life?  What chapters seem to resonate with your life today?  You might want to ask your parents or other people to look through the Table of Contents and help you pick the most valuable chapters.

As a class, we'll pick the chapters that we'll read.  I'll schedule the reading so that its reasonable.  We'll take as long as we need.  I imagine we might end up reading 10 chapters altogether.

When you have picked them, post your choices as a comment here.  Try to explain your choices: why those chapters?

13 comments:

  1. Chapter 1: Management as Social Function and Liberal Art- I think it is important that we read this chapter because in a sense it would give us a foundation for management and entrepreneurs in general.

Chapter 4: What Nonprofits Are Teaching Business-This chapter interests me because I volunteered at a nonprofit last summer; it would be interesting to learn the different economic strategies between nonprofits and businesses.

Chapter 5: Social Impacts and Social Problems- I would be interested to
know what solutions Drucker gives for when social issues coincide with management.

Chapter 9: Picking People, the Basic Rules- I would like to read this chapter because I think it would be useful to know what employers are looking for, especially since all of us are already in the work force or are going to enter the work force soon.

Chapter 19: Leadership as Work- This chapter appeals to me because I think that Druker's view on what makes a capable and successful leader would definitely be worth reading. I also think that the 3 chapters before this one would also be applicable to our lives right now because they seem to be building on the topic of finding your strengths, which is so important when deciding on a college/career/future.

  2. Ch. 3: The Purpose and Objectives of a Business-- I would like to read this chapter because I am interested in knowing what is the purpose of a business and what are some objectives someone should have in a business.
Ch. 5: Social Impact and Social Problems-- I would like to also read this chapter because I want to know what are some social impacts and what is his way to solve certain issues.
Ch. 8: Management by Objectives and Self-Control-- I want to also read this chapter because I want ti know about how a business should be managed and how important is self-control.
Ch. 9: Picking People-- The Basic Rules-- I want to read this chapter to see what type of people should a business man or woman choose, and what are the qualities one should look for.
Ch. 15: Know Your strengths and and Values-- Because I think it is good to be able to know what your values are and your strength. I believe this chapter would be good to read and get a look or insight a Druker's view.
Ch. 23: This chapter I would also like to read because it seems interesting.I would like to know what he means by an Emergence of Knowledge Society.

  3. Well I didn't bring my book home because I picked my chapters on Thursday but the two that especially caught my eye were Chapter 15: Know Your Strengths and Values, and Chapter 9: Picking People. 15 looked good because knowing your strengths and values is important not only in the business/job world, but also for us as seniors heading off to college. Chapter 9 looked good because knowing who to associate one's self with is important in any walk of life. Chapter 8 also looks interesting, for similar reasons.

  4. 3. The Purpose and Objectives of a Business--This chapter title particularly caught my eye because I recall Dr. Martinez mentioning it, in a somewhat catchy manner. The answer is different than most people would think, and that intrigues me.
    4. What the Nonprofits Are Teaching Business--This chapter title, though perhaps a tad less practical, strikes my interest specifically because it seems a little more unusual.
Chapters 7-12, perhaps with the exception of 8--Based solely on apparent practicality.
    13. Effectiveness Must Be Learned--I assume Drucker teaches us how?
    17. Effective Decisions--Anything with the word effective in it seems practical. Decision making is a big part of life, and apparently the business world as well.
    19. Leadership as Work--This seems a call to effectiveness and innovation as well.
    20. Principles of Innovation--Innovation is what drives the business world and the world in general.
    36. From Analysis to Perception--The New Worldview--The adaptation to the time and knowledge of how to pounce on the business world that is coming is important--acknowledging changes and learning how to face them.

  5. Chapter three: The Purpose and Objectives of a business- I think this chapter would be a necessity to go over and review to familiarize ourselves with what really makes a business successful
Chapter five: Social impacts and social problems- It has always interested me on how society influences things and I'm not entirely familiar with business at all so this would be interesting to learn
Chapter eight: Management by objectives and self control- Just by the title I'm curious to know just what requires self control in a business
Chapter ten on the Entrepreneurial business because I have no idea what it is
Chapter twenty-one:the second half of your life- the title is engaging enough I'm quite intrigued and want to know more about what he has to say about it

  6. Ch 4 - what non profits are teaching business. I think this would actually be really interesting, I've been volunteering and working for non-profit businesses my whole life - id like to know more about them.
Ch 9 - picking people. I think this would be a good chapter to read because it will teach all of us something, even those who don't want to go into business
Ch 15 - know your strenghs and values. Again, this chapter will be very interesting for those of us who don't want to go into busness as well as those who do.

  7. Chapter Three: The Purpose and Objectives of a Business. Just read the title. I am ready to learn about business and this might be a good place to start.

Chapter Five: Social Impacts and Social Problems. I chose this chapter because I understand in starting a business, there will be an impact on the society surrounding it. I would like to know how to react to that.

Chapter Nine: Picking People- the Basic Rules. I hurriedly put my book down to type in this chapter after spotting the title. Perhaps the most essential part to a business is choosing the right people to run it. I am so eager to read it.

Chapter Sixteen: Know Your Time. What does it mean? Is it time management? Is it choosing the right time to strike a business deal? There are so many questions.

Chapter Twenty One: The Second Half of Life- I am right now at the age of eighteen. I hope I am not in the second half of my life. But looking at this title, I believe I could learn about how to deal with finances when that time comes.

  8. 2. The Dimensions of Management: This is important because it seems like it will give an overview of managing.
    3. The Purpose and Objectives of a Business: I am interested in this because I hope to own a business one day.
    7. The Information Executives Need Today: This seems interesting because it uses the word "today" meaning it is modern.
    9. Picking People- The Basic Rules: This would be smart to read because it says right in the name "the basic rules" meaning the basic but important.
    10. The Entrepreneurial Business and 12. Entrepreneurial Strategies: This appeals to me because I am going to be working on a concentration on Entrepreneurship in college.
15 Know Your Strengths and Values, 16. Know Your Time, and 19. Leadership at Work: These are good chapters because they all are pertinent to being a successful businessperson.
    24. The Coming of Entrepreneurial Society: Again, I am interested in this because i want to be an entrepreneur.

  9. Chapter 3: I think it is safe to say that everyone in this class in interested in how to make money and succeed. A chapter that focuses on the Purpose of Buisness could prove to be useful and insightful to all of the potential businessman (or women) in the class.

Chapter 9: The concept of molding the ability to read people into a science is deeply fascinating...or at least that is my opinion. I think this chapter could provide us with as aspect of economics that we have not experienced yet.

Chapter 13: I'm curious as to what he means when he says effectiveness must be learned. I was always under the impression that certain people are just born with a better managerial skill set than others. I'd like to know how Druker proposes we "teach" effectiveness.

Chapter 22: This chapter reminds me of an advertisement for medicare. Out of an immature sense of wonder, I'm eager to see what he talks about in this chapter. Is this a chapter about retirement? Or is it a chapter about maturing in the buisness world?

Chapter 25: I love politics, and as such would love to read a chapter that blends together the ideas of citizenship and economics. How does one use the economy to preform their civic duties or contribute to society?

  10. Chapter 3: I picked this one because I want to know the purpose of business
Chapter 5: I picked this one because I think it would be interesting to delve deeper into social problems and economics…if that makes sense.
Chapter 9: This one seems interesting as well. It looks like it would be an awesome chapter to read because dealing with people is what I am interested in.
Chapter 15: This chapter looks interesting and it would be interesting to find out what my strengths and values are.
After that I would like to read all of them they all look so in tune with what I want to learn. I would defiantly want to read all the book. Since we are not then these are the chapter I would like to read in class.

  11. Chapter 2: Because I think that when trying to put a business together you need to know as much as you can about management.
Chapter 5: Because social impacts and problems always effect a business
Chapter 9: Because the people is what a business is made of. without the people there is no business. You have to pick the people that will work for you. the People you want your business to appeal to the most etc.
Chapter 15: i think is a very import chapter because everyone should know themselves in a business

  13. Pope JPII does a good job of summarizing Rerum Novarum. He is very articulate and clearly explains the terms of the discussion, which can get messy at times. He is very adamant in his position that man has certain rights which the State must comply with, but at the same time must not assume control over.
